How to start a solopreneur content creation business

You’ve been watching content creators for years. Their lives look so nice and you want to have what they have. They don’t have a boss. They can travel freely. Not to mention they make more money in one month than you make in a year.

Its safe to say there are a lot of reasons to be a content creator. But when people decide to take the plunge they get stuck. There are many questions that pop up like:

  1. Which social media should I post the most on?
  2. How do I grow my following?
  3. How else do I monetize besides ads?
  4. How long will it take for me to make money from ads?
  5. What will I talk about once I get started?

If these questions have started to swirl in your mind and have prevented you from taking the next step – don’t worry I’ll answer them so you can get started.

What social media should I post the most on?

This one in my opinion is the easiest to answer. I would post the most on the platform that you are on the most.

I spend most of my entertainment time on Youtube. So I prefer posting on Youtube. I understand what content can work there and what content will flop. Having an inherent understanding of what content will perform on the platform that you choose gives you an advantage that others will find it difficult to replicate.

You should also take into consideration how easy it is to generate content. For example Youtube videos with a lot of editing can take a lot of time to create. Often it takes more time to edit a video than it does to record it. If you wanted to post on a place like Twitter or Youtube shorts or Tiktok, those platforms allow you to make shorter content which makes it easier to create since it doesn’t take as much time to create.

You can choose whatever path you want to take.

How do I grow my following?

The shortest answer to this question goes like this: post a lot of content and be genuine.

As long as you do those two things people will naturally be attracted to your content and you. The more content you produce the more chances you have at showing up in your audience’s feed. So post post post!

It may help to talk about newsworthy topics. For example if you were making a YouTube channel about gardening and a company produced a new way to grow plants indoors people may be interested in that. Make a video about this newsworthy thing and people will comment whether or not they like it.

The most important factor in growing your following is to post more content that people care about.

How do I monetize besides ads?

Content creation platforms can sometimes be difficult to monetize from.

There are times in the year where ad rates are down and you aren’t making what you used to. You could even be put in a position where your content doesn’t get shown as much. If that happens you definitely will lose ad revenue.

You should also sell products. Things like:
  1. digital templates
  2. courses
  3. ebooks
  4. mugs
  5. t-shirts
  6. hats
  7. sponsorships
There are many ways that you can make money from your content creation business besides just ads. Just make sure you mention your products in your content and you’ll make money!

How long will it take for me to make money from ads?

This is a complicated question that has no definitive answer. You could either start making tons of money right off the bat (unlikely) or you could make no money for years. I would err on the side of caution and plan on making money after six months.

In the mean time, you can solely focus on making great content that people enjoy. Making your audience happy should increase your ability to create content that performs well on your platform of choice. Which means that you’ll make money soon enough.

You just need to focus on making great content and then after a while you’ll make money from ads.

What will I talk about once I get started?

I know what you are thinking. You have made your social media profiles and you have a dozen different ideas that you want to talk about. But when it comes to putting your ideas into action suddenly you have a hard time fleshing out your idea.

You should ask yourself these questions in order to make some content:

  1. What are people interested in (in your community)
  2. What are YOU interested in?
  3. What are some staple topics that everyone in your community needs to know about?
For example, if you are talking about gardening online beginners would have a lot of questions like “how do I prevent diseases from getting to my plants?” And you can make a video about that. Understanding what people are interested in is a massive source of information.
